What to Do .....

More relaxed than Phuket, Khao Lak is a place to take it easy with friends and family, read a book and get back to nature with the benefit of modern comforts! Arriving by road and rounding the headland after Laem Ru national park, the Andaman sea and golden sandy beach can be seen stretching north to the horizon and beyond for 30 km up to Takua Pa. The main development of low rise hotels and resorts are soon encountered centred around Hat Khao Lak with the next quieter Hat Bang Sak beach area some 8 km further north.

Going for exploratory walks along the beach dotted here and there with cosy local style restaurants and bars, taking a nature tour and exploring the interior, sightseeing by elephant, trekking through the jungle or rafting with an overnight stay on Chio Larn lake are all popular leisure activities. Experienced local tour guides are readily available.

The nearest 18 hole golf course is at Thai Muang some 30km south on the road back to Phuket.

Where to Go .....

Those seeking adventure should consider hiring a car or motorbike and travel some of the back roads that cut through the spectacular mountain formations that stretch from Khao Lak to the eastern side of the Thai-Malay peninsula. Also the coastal road up to Takua Pa has limited traffic and runs straight as a die for most of the way, lined either side with plantations and tropical forest that, when in bloom, make the journey a special experience. Dotted along the way there are numerous quiet beaches and charming resorts plus local Thai style watering holes to explore.

Tap Lamu: Just 15 minutes from Hat Khao Lak this is the nearest fishing port which is also used for tourist boat departures to the Similan Islands. There is a typical Thai restaurant beside the main jetty where one can enjoy the fresh local cuisine.
Phang Nga Town: It is possible to make a scenic circular day trip from Khao Lak to Phang Nga town through stunning mountain scenery. Phang Nga town has several places worth visiting, including the famous bay with its towering weathered limestone karsts colourfully streaked with hues of black, tan, ivory, grey and red. Longtail boats can be hired from the local pier.
Takua Pa: This is a small town with many of the old-time wooden Chinese shop houses remaining intact from the tin mining days. It acts as the central junction for those travelling east to Surat Thani through the scenic mountain pass or north along the coast road up to Ranong. Takua Pa is a short drive of approx. 33 kilometres north of Hat Khao Lak.
Koh Phra Thong: This is a large beautiful island that forms part of a spectacular natural harbour in Kuraburi District 30 kl north of Takua Pa . Virtually uninhabited with only one eco-tour resort, "Golden Buddha Beach", the island’s forests and wildlife remain largely pristine complemented by long white sandy beaches. Koh Phra Thong can be accessed by a 1.5 hr boat journey from Kuraburi pier.
Ranong Thailand and Kaw Thaung, Myanmar: These are the Thai and Burmese border towns facing each other across the Ranong river, a 200 kilometres drive north of Hat Khao Lak. It is possible to cross from Thailand into Kaw Thaung for the day without a Burmese visa. Ranong also boasts a natural spa water health centre.

The Khao Lak area also takes in 4 national parks:

Hat Thai Muang
Located in Thai Muang National Park at the southern end of Phang-nga Province, Hat Thai Muang enjoys pristine shoreline aptly named "Turtle beach" as sea turtles come to lay their eggs here from November to February each year. Species include the Leatherback and Oliver Ridley turtles, although in recent years numbers and sightings have reportedly been on the decrease.
Khaolak/Laem Ru
Runs along the west coast and offers mangroves and estuaries in addition to the mature forest. Lots of exotic plants and wildlife including gibbon monkeys.
Khao Soke
Khao Soke is a magnificent preserve of uncut rainforest a little more than an hour’s drive away. Trek through the forest and stay on a raft house on the a huge Cheow Lan lake, bordered by cliffs and caves in a setting right out of a fairy tale. Waking up on the edge of the lake, you may see various primates and other wildlife playing in the forest or on the shore.
Sri Phang Nga
Located in the Kuraburi district beyond Takua Pa about 60 kms north from Hat Khao Lak, visitors can experience the tropical rainforest, spend a day hiking, and even stay overnight in the park camping grounds.

Weather:

The coastal weather of the Andaman Sea around Khao Lak is dictated by the arrival of the tropical monsoons. Generally, the temperature is warm all year round with the hottest period occurring during the month of April when it can reach 36°C.

The monsoonal season which brings in heavy downpours commences in May and lasts till early December, the wettest month being September. However, there are long sunny periods alternating with the rains.

December to April is the most popular time for sun seekers to visit as it is the end of monsoons. During this period blue skies with pleasant temperatures and wonderful sunlight can be expected.

The tropical climate in Khao Lak is enjoyed by visitors through the different seasons with many ecologists and botanists preferring to visit during the rainy period when the rainforest is at its most interesting.
