Highlights
Journey on board the Eastern & Oriental Express on this 'Thai Explorer' departing from Bangkok with visits to Ayutthaya, Chiang Mai, Lampang and the infamous River Kwai en route.

NOTE: Prior to the coming of the railroad in the late 1800s, the journey from Bangkok to the remote northern outpost of Chiang Mai could, with a little bad luck, consume three months of arduous travel. First, up river by flat boat, then by elephant into the highlands fighting floods, insects, bandits, ferocious heat and the inevitable man-eating tiger.

Itinerary

Wednesday: AYUTTHAYA

Depart Bangkok in the morning aboard the Eastern & Oriental Express and settle into your beautifully appointed compartment. Lunch is served in the restaurant as the train journeys northwards through the Thai countryside. Disembark at Ayutthaya where the magnificent ruins of temples, palaces and crumbling fortresses provide eloquent testimony of the former capital’s splendour. A guided tour through the heart of the city is followed by a relaxing river cruise, passing the famous Wat Chai Wattanaram and the Queen of Thailand's, Ayutthaya Palace. Sit back and watch the riverside life glide by and enjoy afternoon tea. During the evening, enjoy dinner on board as the train continues its journey. Retire to your compartment which has been transformed into a cosy bedroom.

Thursday: CHIANG MAI

Breakfast is served to you by your steward in the comfort of your private compartment before arrival into Chiang Mai, Thailand’s second largest city. Chiang Mai has a rich and colourful history evident in its architecture and is renowned for the greatest concentration of handicraft industries in the country. Enjoy your chosen sightseeing tour - the city, handicraft workshops, or an elephant camp - before returning to the Eastern & Oriental Express for lunch. Later that afternoon you arrive into Lampang, where you may disembark and stretch your legs. Dinner and overnight onboard the train.

Friday: KANCHANABURI

Enjoy breakfast as the train makes its approach to Kanchanaburi where you disembark. On arrival at the River Kwai Bridge station, the E&O stops to allow passengers to disembark. Guides escort you on the short walk down to the jetty to board a local raft for a cruise along the lush greenery of the picturesque Kwai Yai river, passing under the Bridge. On board, a local historian provides a brief overview of the history of the Thailand-Burma railway and the bridge. At the E&O landing point you board a motor coach for a brief trip past the North Temple and Chinese Cemetery to the Thailand-Burma Railway Centre. As you explore the informative museum, the historian is available to answer questions. There is time to visit the Don Rak War Cemetery adjacent to the museum if you wish. Rejoin the coach for the short ride to the Kanchanaburi railway station to board the Eastern & Oriental Express.
